Beer or water through the pipes in Bruges?

Eekels Pompen is currently busy constructing a 4,000 m³/h pressure-side pipe and pump system. This system is being set up to allow renewal of the main sewer on Waggelwater business park on the west side of Bruges, Belgium. The contract for this extensive project was awarded by Flemish water treatment company Aquafin to Viabuild, the main contractor.

The TPS consists of:

  • three 16” electric pumps (1 stand-by);
  • frequency control via control containers;
  • power feed provided by two 400 kVa electric generators (1 stand-by).

Several craft businesses, small and medium-sized enterprises and trading companies are located on Waggelwater business park. Brouwerij De Halve Maan is one of the companies at Waggelwater. This brewery humorously decided to take advantage of the main sewer refurbishment project to play a trick on local residents. The project required us to lay several kilometres of pipes (Ø800 mm) in combination with pipe bridges. The brewery did its best to convince local residents that the work involved construction of a surface-mounted beer supply line. We captured some of the surprise and astonishment in this short video on Facebook. At the end of the video, one of our foremen put an end to any illusions by saying that the pipe will be used to divert sewage water. The pumps supplied by Eekels play an important role in achieving this.
