Eekels Pompen helps combat flooding in Amsterdam caused by a burst water main

When a water main burst in Van der Boechorststraat in Amsterdam-Zuid on Tuesday morning (8-9), several nearby streets were flooded. As a result of the burst water main, parts of the nearby VU Medical Centre, including the boiler house, were flooded. This meant that the hospital could no longer guarantee a continuous supply of water for patients. All five hundred patients had to be transferred to other hospitals.

Drainage

The leak was plugged shortly after 9am, however residents and commuters in the area are still severely affected by the flooding. At present, Waternet, the municipality of Amsterdam’s water company, is busy pumping away the water using manhole suction pipes and temporary pumps that were delivered and installed by Eekels earlier in the morning. Eekels’ deployment of a total of 7 Betsy polluted water pumps and 1 Grindex submersible is making a significant contribution to combating this emergency. The work to repair the burst water main is expected to last a further 2 to 3 days.
